What unhealthy foods do you crave? Are you easily tempted by a bag of salty chips? Is that donut in the break room calling your name? How about that pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in the freezer?
Most of us struggle with food cravings of some sort. It typically has nothing to do with hunger and everything to do with feelings. Food is often a source of comfort. Or a way to cope with stress in your life.
Food may provide momentary pleasure but it never truly satisfies!
For as long as I can remember I have craved candy. I would sneak it out of the pantry as a child. As a teenager I usually had a “stash” hidden somewhere in my room. Sweet, chewy candy like Skittles or Mike & Ikes.
This candy craving followed me into adulthood. Standing in line at the grocery store next to the candy was the worst. And the candy isle at the store…well, I won’t even go there. If you looked in the drawer of my nightstand you would often find a box of candy (or two). And candy isn’t the only food craving I’ve battled.
There I said it. It’s not easy being totally honest. It’s something I hid (or tried to hide) from everyone. Really…a grown woman craving (even addicted to) candy? It always seemed kind of silly to me but I felt helpless to stop.
Food cravings are REAL and it’s not easy to overcome them. But there is HOPE!
This Fall I picked up a copy of Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst. I read it in my hunting blind and it really spoke to me. I think I highlighted half the book!
**Note the healthier snacks for hunting. I couldn’t very well take candy (my usual hunting treat) while reading a book about overcoming cravings. 😉
I felt like the book armed with what I needed to overcome the battle raging within me. God can (and will) empower me to win the battle over food (sweets).
