Why I Kept my Son Home from School…and Why I don't Regret it!
My 3 youngest children attend a school/homeschool partnership program. Last week they had the opportunity to take some standardized tests at their school. I opted to keep my youngest son home with me for the 4 days of testing. He would have had 1/2 days and the older 2 had full days so it would have meant 3 trips back and forth to school each day.
The testing was not mandatory but I was feeling a little selfish in my decision to keep him home.
We dropped the kids off at school on Monday morning and it was just the 2 of us in the car. As we were chatting together on the way home it really struck me how rarely we get to spend time together – just the 2 of us.
We hadn't really had that time together since he was in Kindergarten.
I decided right then that I was going to change my plans for the week and make time to do some fun things together. We didn't do anything so special, it was more about being together and doing things we enjoy.
Sometimes it's the small things that mean the most!
Each day we worked together to pick up the house and do a few household chores first. Work before play…but even work can be fun!
We read together.
We went to a few garage sales.
We shopped at Goodwill (one of his favorite places to look for treasures).
We played some games.
We made pumpkin donuts for a special after school treat for the other kids.
We simply enjoyed spending time together and had a great week!
I no longer feel guilty about keeping my son home from school because the time we spent together was priceless!
It was a rare gift in the midst of the "busyness" of life!
